Neck acne is very similar to back acne. Although the neck is very close to the face, acne on neck and jawline is more similar to body acne than to facial acne. Just like back acne, it is embarrassing, and it affects more men than women.
Neck acne lesions can be non-inflammatory (whiteheads or blackheads) or inflammatory (papules, pustules, nodules and cysts). The skin on the neck is thick and can also produce a lot of sebum (oil). Acne lesions on the neck can be more severe than on the face or chest, so if you have acne on the neck, you might have a lot of nodules and cysts.
The treatment of neck acne is based upon its severity (mild to moderate to severe) and the type of lesions present (whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, nodules, and cysts).
Neck Acne Causes
Neck acne is caused by skin pores that get clogged because of cells that build-up inside the pores. Bacteria, as well as sebum (skin oil) which would normally be eliminated through the surface of the skin get trapped in the pores. This is the main cause of neck acne.
Causes of neck acne also include irritation. Neck acne can be aggravated by irritation, especially for men who wear collared shirts. Anything that can irritate the skin on the neck can cause acne or aggravate existing acne on neck, and should be avoided.
How To Get Rid Of Neck Acne
Basically there are 3 steps you should take if you want to know how to get rid of neck acne.
The first step is to determine the severity of your neck acne.
Not sure how to determine the severity of your acne? Check out this page: Body Acne Information.
If you have severe acne, you should visit your dermatologist. If you neck acne is mild to moderate, you can use many topical treatments to get rid of it. Products may include benzoyl peroxide, alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid, or salicylic acid. There are also a number of natural treatments that can help you treat neck acne.
The second step is to determine your skin type. Basically there are 5 different skin types and they are as follows: normal skin (not prone to acne), combination skin, oily skin, dry skin, and sensitive skin. Oily skin is very common on the neck, and it is probable that if your acne is mild to moderate, you should look for a neck acne treatment that will eliminate the excess of sebum (oil) produced.
For more information about skin types, check out this page: How to get rid of body acne.
The third step is to choose a product that will help you get rid of your neck acne. There are many OTC products available, and you might have to try several before finding the one that really works for you, as treating neck acne can be more complicated than treating facial acne.
